8 Week Courses

Our goal here as educators is to lead our students to a place where they can think and work independently in clay – The ceramic world and process can feel intimidating or overwhelming at times- but we take it step by step, and focus on a strong foundation that can be built upon indefinitely, so that you can understand how to approach anything it is you want to make in this medium.

Two Schools Of Ceramic Craft That We Teach ...

Wheel Throwing:

Learning how to throw a pot on the wheel is similar to learning how to play an instrument – First, you build some muscle memory in your hands and body. Then, you have to understand the theory behind it- How to make it do what you want. Once your body and mind get it, you have to find the wheel’s rhythm, and keep tempo with it. There are several steps and skill sets that go into making a finished pot on the wheel, all fun and rewarding in their own way.

Hand Building:

Pottery was being made long before the invention of the wheel…
In our Hand building course you’ll learn about clay and other relevant materials,  different techniques for construction and decoration – and how to apply them to whatever it is you choose to create – Once you’re feeling confident with some new skills, your teacher will  advise and help guide you through projects of your own choosing.

All 8-Week Classes meet Once/Week

Level 1 Wheel: All the Basics

This foundation wheel course focuses on the basics of making pots, from beginning to end of the process. Perfect for people with zero – a little experience, and those returning to pottery after a long break.

You’ll spend 8 weeks working on your cylinder – the foundation form in wheel thrown pottery – as well as surface decoration techniques, trimming technique, and glazing.

Level 2 Wheel: All the Forms

This wheel course is where you start building on your foundation, and learn to guide the clay where you want it to go.
Each week we will focus on turning that cylinder into a different form, and variation of forms – We’ll also approach more advanced subjects such as throwing “off the hump”, double walled vessels, advanced glazing techniques, and more

*Experience required – Student should already be comfortable with pulling up a cylinder, trimming, etc…

Tableware: Design & Production

Open to both Wheel and Hand Building students!

Tableware is something every civilization has in common – Every culture has adapted some sort of material (very often clay) to fill the basic need to serve and eat food- developing techniques, forms, surfaces, and designs to suit their specific tastes, styles, and cuisines.

The first class will be a discussion on tableware throughout history and across the globe – By understanding a bit about the culture and time historic dishes were made in, We can draw inspiration and start discussing how to make things relevant to us here and now.

The rest of the course will be spent designing and prototyping tableware, with the goal of having a full set, true to you, prototyped by the end of the session.

We will also discuss production techniques- making multiples of the same form – and learn tips and tricks of the trade (besides practice).

*Experience required – Wheel students should have completed our Level 2 course, or have relevant experience. Hand Building students should have completed at least one Foundation Hand Building Course, or have relevant experience

Daily Open Studio time for practicing is included with all courses!
